“As a child, I used to run along El Espino beach chasing the planes that flew towards the volcano. I dreamed of leaving, of getting away from this fishing village where I worked on other people's boats for a pittance. It wasn't until I was 38 that my chance came. Or at least, that's what I thought. The loan for the ticket to Belgium had to be paid back quickly, I couldn’t find work, and the debts were piling up. It wasn’t leaving, but returning home that saved me: thanks to the reintegration assistance, I can now pay off my own boat. I have always wanted one.”
