“I am extremely grateful to Belgium for the excellent medical care during the year we stayed there. I had eight bullet wounds when I arrived from Mozambique. I survived a murder attempt after false accusations of espionage by local businessmen.

Returning to Mozambique was not an option, and we did not want to stay in Belgium either – the best place to start a business is your own country. At the beginning of 2021, my wife and I returned to Kigali. We have founded a transport company and are quite pleased. Moreover, our child is doing well at school. What more could we ask for?”

This is not a decision taken lightly: in 2024, the return was preceded by almost 3,000 interviews regarding the practicalities or the future. And back home, there is still an accompaniment of one year provided by local organisations.
